Permanent lights or seasonal string lights: which fits your home?

Compare the look, setup, and upkeep before choosing how to light your house for the holidays and the rest of the year.

If you mostly want lights for a few weeks in December, your decision may be different from a homeowner who wants a lighted roofline throughout the year. Start with how you will use the lights and the look you enjoy. Price alone does not tell you whether the setup will suit your house.

Think about the finished look first

Traditional strings can give you a distinct outline of individual bulbs and can be arranged around shrubs, railings, or an entry. Permanent roofline lighting follows a planned route on the house. Depending on the product and placement, its light can fall across the wall below the eaves.

Look at examples with a roof shape and wall color similar to yours. A lighting effect on a tall, pale wall may look different on a low brick porch. Ask to discuss the everyday setting as well as the brightest holiday display.

Compare the work across the year

Seasonal strings need a plan for putting them up, taking them down, and storing them. A permanent system is intended to stay installed, so the initial layout matters more. It should include a sensible route for cables and accessible equipment rather than a temporary arrangement you have to work around later.

Permanent does not mean maintenance-free. Ask how the proposed product is serviced, which components can be replaced, and what the installation and product warranties actually cover. Get those details for the specific equipment in the estimate.

Consider controls before choosing a product

Decide who will operate the lights and whether you want simple everyday settings or frequent color changes. Govee describes app-based scenes and schedules in its setup guide. Features and connection requirements depend on the model. If you already own a kit, send its model number before arranging an installation.

It is also worth deciding when the lights should turn off. You can enjoy the roofline without running a bright animated scene late into the night.

Compare estimates with the same coverage

Write down the roof sections you want, the desired lighting style, and whether the quote includes equipment and setup. Comparing a front porch with an entire two-story roofline will not tell you much about value. Our layout planning checklist will help you gather the right details.

For a permanent option in Northwest Indiana or Chicagoland, explore Northline's installation service or request an estimate. We can start with the parts of the house you want lit and talk through the layout from there.
