Planning your installation
What to plan before buying permanent outdoor lights
A roofline sketch, clear photos, and a plan for power can make your lighting estimate much more useful.

A kit's advertised length is only one part of a permanent lighting plan. The route between roof sections, the position of the outlet, and the surfaces under the eaves all affect what will fit. Before ordering lights, put together a simple picture of the parts of the house you want lit.
Mark the roof sections you actually want covered
Take a straight-on photo of the front of your home and one from each front corner. Mark the garage, porch, upper story, and any side sections you want included. It is fine to start with the front of the house. A front-only installation and a wraparound installation are different scopes, and your estimate should say which one it covers.
Note the places where the lights would need to stop or cross an unlit gap. A porch roof below a second-story eave needs more thought than a single straight run. Photos taken from the ground are enough for the first conversation; you do not need to climb up to measure.
Show the mounting surface and power location
Include a closer photo of the underside of the eaves and a photo of the outlet you expect to use. Mention peeling paint, loose trim, or upcoming roof and gutter work. Those details help an installer discuss what needs attention before the lights go up.
Govee's installation guidance calls for planning the route and power source, testing the lights, and preparing the mounting surface. The instructions for the exact model should determine compatible extensions, fastening, and setup. Do not assume parts from different kits can be mixed.
Decide what you want the house to look like at night
Save one example of the everyday look you like and one holiday look. Tell us whether you want a quiet warm-white outline, more color, or both. A photo is often easier to discuss than a product effect name. Also point out bedroom windows or nearby homes where you want to keep the light restrained.
Ask for a clearly defined estimate
- Which roof sections and connecting runs are included?
- Who supplies the lights, mounting materials, and compatible accessories?
- Where will the controller and power supply sit?
- What setup and walkthrough are included at completion?
- What happens if a section needs attention later?
